Information Literacy

The Sage Colleges Libraries offers several instruction opportunities to help students learn how to find, use and evaluate information effectively.

  • Customized In-Class Bibliographic Instruction Sessions

  • 1-credit Information Literacy course (ITD 110)

  • Online Library Tutorials and Handouts

Customized Bibliographic Instruction Sessions
Any faculty member whose course assignments require the use of library resources, or whose students may be unfamiliar with the academic research process, is encouraged to schedule a library instruction session. A librarian will work with you to define your class’s research needs and develop a library instruction module tailored specifically for your course. Library instruction sessions typically encompass an entire class period (or more than one class period) and can be offered in the library, in a computer lab (if available), or in your own classroom.

You may schedule library instruction sessions for your class any time during the semester.  Please note that library instruction sessions are most effective when they coincide with a research assignment so that students perceive a real need for the information.

Class material may consist of one or more of the following topics:

  •  Identification of scholarly resources

  • Searching for books and materials in the online catalog (including interlibrary loan)

  • Using library research databases (this can be subject-specific)

  •  Using reference sources

  •  Avoiding plagiarism

  • Evaluating sources

  •  Searching for and evaluating web resources

1-credit Information Literacy course (ITD 110)
Each semester, a one-credit Information Literacy credit course is offered on both campuses in an online or face-to-face format. Our Information Literacy course is comprehensive and complies with the Middle States Commission on Higher Education guidelines for information literacy at the Freshman and Sophomore levels.

Check the course catalog to get the latest information about current course offerings.

Online Library Tutorials and Handouts
The Sage Colleges Libraries web site, http://library.sage.edu, includes a host of library resources.  Not only can research databases and online catalogs be accessed on-site or remotely 24/7, there are several online “how-to” materials (in printable format) and tutorials that you may either use personally or print to share with a class.

To learn more about these opportunities or schedule a class, contact your liaison librarian or Amy Pass, Information Literacy Librarian, at passa@sage.edu or 244-3106.
